Underground pipes and irrigation
From the water meter to the house, from the house to the pool, the water tank, the guest house or right across the garden: underground pipes in Mallorca tend to be long, old and poorly documented. A leak can quietly feed water into the ground for weeks. We pinpoint the spot so you only dig there.
Typical cases
- Mains supply pipe: the meter is running, everything inside the house is tight – the leak is on the way from the meter to the building.
- Garden pipework: feeds to the pool, outdoor shower, guest house, garage or garden taps.
- Irrigation: the main drip or sprinkler line loses pressure, some zones stay dry, wet patches appear in the lawn.
- Water tank / depósito: level keeps dropping, feed or distribution pipe leaking.
How we locate leaks in the ground
Two methods, depending on pipe material and situation:
Electro-acoustic
Water escaping under pressure makes a noise. With the Aquaphon A200 and the BM200 ground microphone we listen for the leak through soil, paving or tarmac and close in on it. Works particularly well on pressurised pipes.
Tracer gas
The pipe is drained and filled with a harmless test gas (a hydrogen–nitrogen mix). The gas escapes at the leak, rises through the ground and is detected at the surface with the Variotec 460. Ideal for plastic pipes, low pressure, or when there is no audible noise.
Process
- Pressure test: which pipe is losing, and how much?
- Establish the pipe route (as far as it is known or can be traced).
- Pinpoint with tracer gas and/or ground microphone.
- Mark the spot on the ground and write up the report with photos.
